Hint: To cycle back and forth between Left/Right and Right/Left modes, touch the TWS button on the speaker with the red TWS LED lit.

What are the different VG3 TWS modes and how do I change them?

When speakers [A] and [B] are connected via TWS, you can change the TWS mode by touching the TWS button on either VG3. When first TWS connected, both speakers will be in stereo mode. Each touch of the TWS button will cycle to the next TWS mode: Left/Right, Right/Left, and TWS Off. From the TWS Off mode, you can reestablish TWS by touching the TWS button again and the VG3 will reconnect automatically in stereo mode.
The TWS modes are indicated by the colors on the TWS LED:

  • Blue/red (purple) on each speaker plays both in stereo mode.
  • Red plays the left channel on the VG3; the other VG3 plays the right channel.
  • Blue plays the right channel on the VG3; the other VG3 plays the left channel.
Hint: To cycle back and forth between Left/Right and Right/Left modes, touch the TWS button on the speaker with the red TWS LED lit.
In TWS Off mode, speaker [B] will be disconnected and playback will only be on speaker [A]. Reestablish TWS by touching the TWS button again and [B] will reconnect automatically.
  • In TWS mode Power off, Volume +/–, Play/Pause and TWS mode will be synchronized. These functions may be controlled from either unit. Mute remains individually controlled per VG3.
  • When TWS is being used, latency will be present. This causes a delay in the audio while watching video.

In TWS mode one VG3 will serve as the primary [A] speaker (meaning it will be connected directly to the Bluetooth device serving as the music source). The second [B] speaker will receive the audio signal from the primary [A] speaker.
While connected with TWS with both [A&B] speakers in use:

  • Connecting an Aux Input cable to speaker [A] will disable Bluetooth on speaker [A] and the TWS connection for both speakers will be inactive. When the Aux Input cable is disconnected from speaker [A], the TWS connection to both speakers will automatically resume.
  • Connecting an Aux Input cable to speaker [B] will disable Bluetooth on speaker [B] and the TWS connection for both speakers will be inactive. Speaker [A] will continue playing the Bluetooth source. When the Aux Input cable is disconnected from speaker [B], the TWS connection will automatically resume.
  • Playback may be paused during the TWS reconnection process. Touching Play/Pause on the VG3 or Play on your mobile device should continue playback.

VG3 power button functions

The Power button on the VG3 serves two primary functions. A one second touch (first beep) will show the "Fuel Gauge" for monitoring the charge of the battery. By holding the Power button for two seconds (second beep), the VG3 will turn on or off.

  • The “Fuel Gauge” only functions when VG3 is turned on.
When two VG3s are connected via TWS, turning off power on either VG3 will turn off power to both.
If the VG3 does not turn on when the Power button is touched for two seconds, make sure the battery is properly connected and charged (see User Manual, page 4). Wipe away excess dust and moisture from the keypad. The touch keypad is designed to react on touch, however quick multiple touches will cause the touch keypad to be temporarily unresponsive. After waiting five seconds and touching the Power button again for two seconds, the keypad should be responsive.

VG3 power doesn’t come on

If the VG3 does not turn on when the Power button is touched for two seconds, make sure the battery is properly connected and charged (see User Manual, page 4). If the battery was empty, you may have to wait a few minutes after connecting the charger before the VG3 can be turned on. The VG3 may turn off during this period if played at higher volumes until the battery has received sufficient charge.
If the Power button is still unresponsive, wipe away excess dust and moisture from the keypad. The touch keypad is designed to react on touch, however quick multiple touches will cause the touch keypad to be temporarily unresponsive. After waiting five seconds and touching the Power button again for two seconds, the keypad should be responsive.

VG3 power is on, but I don’t hear any sound

The VG3 will only play audio through a Bluetooth connection or cable via Aux In.
If you are trying to use a Bluetooth device such as a mobile phone, and the Bluetooth indicator LED is off or blinking, the VG3 is not connected to the device. Follow the instructions for Bluetooth Pairing (see User Manual page 5). Also, make sure that an audio cable is not plugged into the Aux Input jack, as this disables all Bluetooth functions.
If you are trying to use the Aux Input, follow the instructions for Aux Input use in the User Manual on page 5.

  • Playback may have been paused during the Bluetooth connection process. Touching Play/Pause on the VG3 or Play on your mobile device will continue playback.

If the Power button is not responsive, wipe away excess dust and moisture from the keypad and try again.
The touch keypad is designed to react on touch, however multiple point touches can cause the touch keypad to be temporarily unresponsive. Let the VG3 rest for five seconds allowing the keypad to reset.

VG3 shuts off when I increase the volume

The VG3 may turn itself off when playing audio at higher volumes if the battery needs charging. Playing at higher volumes will drain the battery faster, and may not allow enough time for the low battery indicator to operate.
Connect the charger, and if desired, continue to play audio at lower volumes until the battery receives sufficient charge to allow playing at higher volume settings. If the battery is nearly exhausted, the VG3 may turn itself off even at low volume settings, so it may be necessary to let the VG3 charge for ten to fifteen minutes before trying to turn it back on.

Locking/Unlocking the VG3 Keypad

The VG3 has two different keypad lockout mechanisms to prevent unintended or accidental operation. Both are disabled by default. When enabled, all normal keypad functions except for Power On/Off will be ignored.

  • If Child Lock or Auto-Lock is active when a phone call is received, the keypad will automatically unlock for the duration of the call, and re-engage after the call is completed.
Child Lock: To enable Child Lock, touch and hold the Mute button for five seconds and release (second beep). The top-most LED (at the 12 o’clock position) will blink blue slowly indicating that the keypad is locked and Child Lock is active.
To disable Child Lock, touch and hold the Mute button for five seconds again (first beep), or, turn the VG3 off (power cycling the VG3 will also disable Child Lock).
Auto Lock: To enable Auto-Lock, touch and hold the Mute button for ten seconds and release (third beep). The volume bar graph will flash twice. The keypad is still unlocked but will lock automatically three minutes after the last button is touched. While locked, the top-most LED will blink green to indicate that the keypad is locked.
To disable Auto-Lock, touch and hold the Mute button for ten seconds and release (first beep). The volume bar graph will flash once. The keypad will now be unlocked.
Auto-Lock will remain enabled or disabled when power cycling the unit.
You can temporarily unlock the keypad while Auto-Lock is active by conducting an “Unlock Swipe”. This can be done by sliding your finger quickly between the power button and any other function button, being sure to release your finger while it is still over the other function button. The volume bar graph will blink once indicating that the keypad is unlocked. Keypad will auto-lock again after three minutes with no interaction.

The VG3 keypad is unresponsive

Make sure that the battery is properly connected and charged (see User Manual page 4). Wipe away excess dust and moisture. The touch keypad is designed to react on touch, however quick multiple touches will cause the touch keypad to be temporarily unresponsive. Let the VG3 rest for five seconds allowing the keypad to reset.
The keypad will also appear to be unresponsive if one of the two VG3 Keypad Lock functions is active (see User Manual pages 7-8).
If the top-most LED (at the 12 o’clock position) is blinking green, Auto-Lock is active. To disable Auto-Lock, touch and hold the Mute button for ten seconds until you hear a beep.
If the top-most LED is blinking blue slowly, Child Lock is active. To disable Child Lock, either touch and hold the Mute button for five seconds until you hear a beep, or turn the VG3 off and back on again.

The VG3 keypad is locked

The keypad will appear to be unresponsive to touching any button except Power On/Off if one of the two VG3 Keypad Lock functions is active (see User manual pages 7-8).

If the top-most LED is blinking blue slowly, Child Lock is active. To disable Child Lock, either touch and hold the Mute button for five seconds until you hear a beep, or turn the VG3 off and back on again.

How do I adjust volume on the VG3?

The VG3 volume can be adjusted by using the + and – Volume buttons at the bottom of the keypad. The volume level will be visually displayed on the circular bar graph in blue LED indicators. A momentary touch will raise or lower the volume one step. The volume will ramp up or down if the button is held down. The VG3 will beep when maximum or minimum volume is reached.
Mobile devices that support the remote volume control functions of the AVRCP protocol will adjust the volume of the VG3 with the mobile device’s volume slider. Not all mobile devices support remote volume control, so the mobile device volume and the VG3 volume may operate independently.
When using TWS, the two VG3s [A&B] volumes will adjust together; touching a volume button on one VG3 will also change the volume on the other.

What happens when I get/make a call while my phone is paired with VG3?

  1. If your phone receives a call while paired with the VG3, touch the Play/Pause button to answer the call. VG3 will become a hands-free speaker phone.

  • If Keypad Auto-Lock or Child Lock is active when call is received, the keypad will automatically unlock for duration of call and re-engage after call completes.

My phone shows a notification that the VG3 battery is low.

When connected to the VG3 speaker with Bluetooth, the phone shows a notification similar to this:

  • Battery power low
10% battery power remaining for VG3 by Soundcast xxxxxx Bluetooth device
Some VG3 speakers may falsely report to the phone that the speaker’s battery level is low, even when the speaker’s battery is sufficiently charged. You can safely ignore this false notification if you know the battery level is not low.
To check the true battery status, touch the VG3 Power button for one second to display the current battery level. When the battery needs to be charged, the red power LED will blink.

VG3 sounds bad/shuts off while charger is connected

The VG3 may not perform properly when the battery needs charging, even when the charger is connected. If the battery is nearly exhausted, the VG3 might sound distorted, or even shut itself off, until the battery receives sufficient charge to enable proper operation. Turn off the VG3 and allow it charge for at least ten to fifteen minutes before trying to use it. Do not attempt to use VG3 without the battery installed. While the VG3 may turn on with the charger connected, it is not capable of proper operation without the battery.

VGtx

Which audio sources are compatible with VGtx?

The VGtx can be used with any device that plays audio and has audio output that can provide a suitable audio signal that the VGtx can transmit as a Bluetooth signal.
Devices such as computers, laptops, smartphones, and stereo systems will typically have audio outputs labelled as ‘headphone’, ’audio output’ or ‘line out’ that can be used. The VGtx is supplied with a 3.5mm to 3.5mm male-to-male cable to connect the Analog Input to devices that have a 3.5mm jack. However, there are adapters and cables available that will allow other plug types, such as RCA jacks, to be connected. When connecting to the VGtx Analog Input, make sure the Input Mode switch is set to Analog.
Note: The VGtx should not be connected to speaker outputs!
Many televisions also provide an audio output that can be used. If only RCA jack outputs are present, use an RCA to 3.5mm cable to connect the television to the VGtx Analog Input. If the television has an optical (Toslink) output, it will provide better quality audio, and you can use the optical cable supplied with VGtx to connect to the Digital Input. In this case, the Input Mode switch should be set to Digital. You can also use the Digital Input with computers, DVD/CD players or stereo systems that provide a stereo optical output.

How do I use the VGtx Digital Output?

The VGtx Digital Output is used in situations where you need to connect an optical (Toslink) output from a television or other source device to both the VGtx and a soundbar or AV receiver. It is only active when the Digital Input is connected to the source device, and will provide a ‘pass-through’ or ‘bypass’ means to relay the audio to the second device.
An example would be where you have a television connected with an optical cable to a soundbar. You would unplug the optical cable from the soundbar and plug it into the VGtx Digital Input jack. Plug the supplied optical cable into the VGtx Digital Output jack and plug the other end into the soundbar. Make sure that the Input Mode switch on VGtx is set to Digital.
The VGtx must be powered on for the Digital Output to function. If the television has a USB jack, you might try to power the VGtx from the USB jack so that it is turned on and off along with the television. Otherwise use the included VGtx power adapter. The VGtx will automatically turn itself on when power is first applied.
While the VGtx will pass through all digital signals to the soundbar, it can only transmit stereo audio via Bluetooth. It cannot decode any surround encoded audio such as Dolby or DTS. You may have to change a setting in the source device’s menu to provide Stereo, PCM, or LPCM audio on the optical output when using Bluetooth.

How do I connect my Bluetooth speaker/headphones with the VGtx?

Like all Bluetooth devices, the speaker or headphones need to be paired with the VGtx.
To pair with the VGtx:

  1. Make sure to place the VGtx and the speaker or headphones close to each other during the pairing process.
  2. Turn on the VGtx.
  3. Put the VGtx into pairing mode by pressing and holding the button for six seconds. The Bluetooth LED will blink an alternating red and blue pattern.
  4. Put the speaker or headphones into pairing mode. For most Soundcast speakers, press the Bluetooth button for two seconds (for VG1, press and hold Play/Pause until a beep is heard). For other devices, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
The connection can take up to ten seconds. Once paired and connected, the VGtx Bluetooth LED illuminates solid blue.
Note: The speaker or headphones must support the Bluetooth Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) to be used with VGtx. Headsets or other devices that only support the Hands Free Profile (HFP) or Hand Set Profile (HSP) will not work.

What do the VGtx LED indicators show?

The VGtx has four LED indicators. Each LED provides information about the way the VGtx is operating.
Bluetooth LED indicator:

  • Slowly blinking blue on and off – VGtx not connected to any device. If previously paired, the device has not been found yet.
  • Fast blinking blue on and off – VGtx has found a previously paired device and is in the process of connecting to it.
  • Solid blue (not blinking) – VGtx is connected to another Bluetooth device.
  • Alternately blinking red and blue – VGtx is in pairing mode waiting to pair with another Bluetooth device.
  • Several blinks of red and blue together – VGtx has just reset its pairing memory.
PWR/LL LED indicator:
  • Solid green – VGtx power is on and aptX Low Latency is not in use.
  • Solid yellow and green – VGtx power is on and aptX Low Latency is currently in use.
Analog LED indicator:
  • Solid orange – The Input Mode switch is set to the Analog position and only the Analog Input is active.
  • Off – The Input Mode switch is set to the Digital position and the Analog Input is not active.
Digital LED indicator:
  • Solid red – The Input Mode switch is set to the Digital position and only the Digital Input is active.
  • Off – The Input Mode switch is set to the Analog position and the Digital Input is not active.

What audio quality does the VGtx provide with Bluetooth?

Several factors can affect audio quality. Obviously the audio quality cannot be any better than the source provides, but it must be understood that the Bluetooth connection will have an impact on quality. The Bluetooth transmitter must first digitally encode the audio and then send it over the Bluetooth connection to the receiving device, where it is then decoded. This process of encoding and decoding the audio is referred to as a “codec” (a mashup of the words coder and decoder).
Different codecs can provide better quality audio, while some may trade off audio quality to allow other features. Each Bluetooth device can have one or more codecs available for use, but in order for any given codec to be used, the devices at both ends must support the same one.
The VGtx has three codecs:

  • SBC – Every Bluetooth A2DP device is required to provide the SBC codec, and this is the codec that will be used if the transmitting and receiving devices do not share any other codecs in common. SBC provides variable quality audio, which depends heavily on the capabilities of each device. The audio latency (delay) is significant and is generally not acceptable when trying to listen to the audio while watching a video.
  • aptX – This codec from CSR/Qualcomm provides CD-quality audio. All Soundcast speakers are capable of using this codec. The audio latency is better than the SBC codec provides, but still not great for synchronizing the audio with video.
  • aptX Low Latency – This is another codec from CSR/Qualcomm that is optimized to keep the audio in sync when watching video. It still provides CD quality audio. Most Soundcast speakers can use this codec.
Note: The aptX Low Latency codec cannot be used if the speaker or headphones are actively using TWS (True Wireless Stereo).

How do I reset the VGtx Bluetooth connection?

To reset the Bluetooth connection memory:

  1. Turn on the VGtx.
  2. Press and hold the button for ten seconds. The Bluetooth LED will flash the both the red and blue LED indicators together several times to indicate that the memory has been cleared.

Which Bluetooth versions will work with the VGtx?

The VGtx is equipped with Bluetooth version 4.2. It is compatible with devices that support Bluetooth versions 3 and higher, and is a long-range (Class 1) Bluetooth transmitter capable of connecting over distances of up to 160 feet (50 meters) line-of-sight with no obstructions.
The VGtx supports only the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) for streaming audio, and includes the SBC, aptX, and aptX Low Latency codecs. The Audio-Visual Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) is not supported. Headsets that do not support A2DP will not work with the VGtx.

How can I control volume using the VGtx with my Bluetooth speaker/headphones?

The VGtx transmitter itself does not have any volume control capability (does not support AVRCP volume control). It simply transmits the audio at whatever level is presented to it by the audio source device. Volume must usually be controlled locally on the speaker or headphones, though in some cases the audio source device may provide a volume control.

My Bluetooth speaker/headphones won’t connect with VGtx

If the Bluetooth speaker or headphones fail to connect with the VGtx transmitter, it may be necessary to reset the Bluetooth memory of both the device and the VGtx.
To reset the VGtx Bluetooth connection memory:

  1. Turn on the VGtx.
  2. Press and hold the button for ten seconds. The Bluetooth LED will flash the both the red and blue LED indicators together several times to indicate that the memory has been cleared. The VGtx is now ready to pair with your Bluetooth device.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to reset the Bluetooth connection on the speaker or headphones, and then activate pairing.
Note: The speaker or headphones must support the Bluetooth Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) to be used with VGtx. Headsets or other devices intended for communication purposes that only support the Hands Free Profile (HFP) or Hand Set Profile (HSP) will not be able to connect to VGtx.

My Bluetooth device is connected to VGtx, but there is no sound

The VGtx is a passive transmitter and has no play/pause or volume control. Be sure that your music source is playing music. The volume level must be adjusted via the Bluetooth speaker or headphones connected to the VGtx, or in some cases via the music source.

  • If the source device is connected to the VGtx optical Digital Input, it can only transmit stereo audio via Bluetooth. It cannot decode any multi-channel encoded audio such as Dolby or DTS. You may have to change a setting in the source device’s menu to provide Stereo, PCM, or LPCM audio on the optical output.
Make sure that the Input Mode switch on VGtx is set to the proper position to match the input source connection.
If problems persist, it may be necessary to reset the Bluetooth memory of both the device and the VGtx.

Sound from VGtx Bluetooth connection is unstable/choppy/stuttering/dropouts

While the VGtx is a long-range transmitter capable of operating over distances of up to 160 feet (50 meters) line-of-sight, Bluetooth connections can be disturbed by walls, other wireless devices and objects between the VGtx and your Bluetooth device. Signal dropouts can also occur when the units are too far apart, or too close to other sources of interfering wireless signals such as WiFi or microwave ovens.
If you are streaming audio from the internet, the issue could be with the WiFi connection to your streaming device. Verify that the audio source is producing a clean and stable output. Also check the connections between the audio source and the VGtx, and that the Input Mode switch is set for the proper type of connection.
Try bringing your Bluetooth device in closer proximity to the VGtx. Try moving the VGtx and/or the Bluetooth device farther away from other devices that are connected via WiFi, such as AV receivers or computers.
If the VGtx is being powered by a different USB source, try using the supplied AC adapter. While most USB sources should be capable of powering the VGtx without any issues, some may not provide an adequate or stable source of power.
If problems persist, reset the Bluetooth pairing on your device and the VGtx, and follow instructions for re-pairing.

The VGtx Bluetooth audio is not synchronized while watching a video

All Bluetooth devices have an inherent delay between the originating audio and when it is heard at the receiving end, referred to as latency. How much latency is present depends upon the method used to encode and decode (the “codec”) the audio transported via the Bluetooth connection.
The VGtx is equipped with the aptX Low Latency codec that is specifically designed to keep the audio synchronized with visual media. However, there are some prerequisites that need to be met before the VGtx can utilize the aptX Low Latency codec:

  1. The receiving Bluetooth speaker/headphones must also be equipped with the aptX Low Latency codec. If this is not the case, depending on the device, either the aptX or SBC codec will be used, resulting in an audio delay that may be objectionable.
  2. The receiving Bluetooth speaker/headphones must not be actively using TWS (True Wireless Stereo) to relay the audio to another Bluetooth device. The requirements of TWS are such that the aptX Low Latency codec cannot be used while TWS is operating. Note that some wireless headphones/earbuds which have no wired connection to each earpiece utilize TWS at all times and will not be able to synchronize the audio.

What are the functions of the VGtx power/Bluetooth button?

While power is off:

  • Press the button for two seconds to turn VGtx on.
While power is on:
  • A short press of the button will turn VGtx off.
  • Press and hold the button for six seconds to clear the existing Bluetooth connection and enter pairing mode. The Bluetooth indicator LED will flash.
  • Press and hold the button for ten seconds to factory reset VGtx. The Bluetooth indicator will briefly flash red and blue alternately, and then enter pairing mode.
Note: The VGtx will also turn itself on when power is first applied via the USB connection. If desired, the USB power source may be switched on and off with other equipment so that the VGtx will automatically power on with the equipment.
